Americans United For Life Action fights the abortion bailout by supporting the Nelson-Hatch-Casey Amendment
“Without the Nelson-Hatch-Casey amendment, America is on the verge of the largest expansion of abortion funding since Roe v. Wade.” — Charmaine Yoest
WASHINGTON (December 7, 2009) — Senators Ben Nelson (D-NE), Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Robert Casey (D-PA) have offered an amendment that would prohibit federal funding for abortion and for insurance plans that cover abortion. This amendment could be offered for a vote as early as today – and unless it passes, the final health bill could lead to the largest expansion of federal funding for abortion in history.
Americans United for Life Action President and CEO Dr. Charmaine Yoest said, “A strong majority of Americans do not want to fund abortion in health care reform. Without the Nelson-Hatch-Casey amendment, America is on the verge of the largest expansion of abortion funding since Roe v. Wade. It is time for the Senate to decide whether to listen to the American people or to move forward with health care legislation that funds abortion on-demand.”
Dr. Yoest continued, “The Reid language in the new Senate health care bill is not the Stupak-Pitts language barring federal funds from going to abortion in health care. It is the opposite of the pro-life Stupak-Pitts language. The U.S. Senate must stop this bill from moving forward by voting no on cloture on this anti-life health care bill.”
Americans United for Life Action President and CEO Dr. Charmaine Yoest and Staff Counsel Mary Harned are available for interviews today and Tuesday about this critical abortion vote in the Senate health care bill.
